When Should You Upload Your Album?

Release Timing Based on DSP Requirements and Music Promotion Strategy

Choosing the correct upload timing directly affects moderation speed, store availability, playlist pitching opportunities, and algorithmic performance on streaming platforms. Below are practical recommendations based on DSP requirements and real-world music marketing practices.

New Releases (Upcoming Releases)

Please upload your NEW releases no later than 7 days before the official release date to avoid delays in moderation, store delivery, and platform synchronization.

The recommended upload window is at least 14 days before the release date. This timeframe allows you to:

  • pass technical and content moderation without time pressure,
  • ensure stable delivery to all selected digital stores,
  • submit your track or album for editorial playlists on Spotify, Apple Music, and other DSPs,
  • properly launch pre-save campaigns,
  • build a structured marketing campaign without risking the release date.

Uploading a release too close to the release date significantly increases the risk of: delayed publication, incomplete store coverage on release day, rejection from editorial consideration, and reduced promotional impact.

Example:
ATB — Distant Earth
Release date: April 29, 2011
Upload date: April 1, 2011

Back Catalog (Previously Released Music)

If you plan to distribute a PREVIOUSLY released album or track, you may indicate its original historical release date.

After submission, the release will appear in digital stores as soon as it completes moderation — without waiting for a future release date.

Such releases are displayed correctly within the artist’s discography, preserve chronological accuracy, and do not negatively affect platform algorithms.

Example:
Madonna — Hung Up
Original release date: October 17, 2005
Digital submission date: August 10, 2010

Why Early Uploading Is Critical for Promotion

  • Spotify and Apple Music editors do not review last-minute submissions for editorial playlists.
  • Platform algorithms respond more effectively to releases with pre-launch activity.
  • Scheduled releases allow audience warm-up, pre-saves, and launch traffic preparation.
  • Late uploading limits both paid and organic promotional opportunities.
